True to their snarky form, our friends at Grist have created a series of Valentine’s Day greetings designed to show your loved ones how much you care — both about them and the damage we’ve done to the planet.
As Amelia Bates and Katie Herzog explain:
“Love is in the air! Or maybe that’s smog. Either way, don’t celebrate this Valentine’s Day by shelling out your hard-earned dollar bills to some corporate behemoth for meaningless cards and mass-market tulips. Instead, give these Gristy valentines to the love of your life — and if they’re all, “Why no chocolate???,” explain that there’s nothing less romantic than deforestation-causing cocoa production.”
As we’ve mentioned here at SB, other planet-friendly versions of traditional Valentine’s Day gifts include locally grown flower bouquets — which can be found at your local farmers’ market or online at SlowFlowers.com— or jewelry from companies such as Tiffany, Target and TOBY POMEROY, which are all committed to more responsible gold and metals sourcing (but maybe steer clear of Jared, Kay and Zales until they clean up their diamond and gold supply chain).
Happy Valentine’s Day!
