Philosopher Eric Hoffer once said, “In a world of change, the learners shall inherit the earth, while the learned shall find themselves perfectly suited for a world that no longer exists.”

At SB ’13 in San Diego, my colleague Ashley Cooper and I, cofounders of The Mycelium School, offered a keynote talk on the seven skills of future leaders. In March of this year, we concluded a successful pilot program designed around cultivating these future skills.

The majority of participants are calling the experience ‘transformative.’

After three years of research, design and prototyping, the Mycelium Learning Journey draws from traditional education, indigenous wisdom, ecology and social change theory. The 12-week Journey is part Life Design, part Leadership Development and part Business Incubator.

Mycelium’s focus is less on knowledge transference and more on capacity-building and network-weaving. Based on living systems, complexity and a world of rapid change, the program is designed to support change agents to best do their work within an uncertain future.

At the core of the program are relationships.

Mycelium, the organization, is modeled after mycelium, the organism — the root system of mushrooms. These roots connect to the roots of trees and plants and transfer information and nutrients to support a healthy ecosystem. Like its namesake, the Mycelium organization uses the design principles of the organism to support people in sharing the information and nutrients needed to nurture a healthy social system.

Learning Journeys are intergenerational and designed to complement people’s everyday lives, jobs and other responsibilities. The Mycelium Learning Journey is supported by a nutrient-rich community of practice comprised of coaches, thought leaders, advisors and other emerging change agents all deepening their work in the world.
